Why softball rules need to be specific

Softball has more rule variations than any other adult rec sport. Slow-pitch or fast-pitch? ASA or USSSA? How many home runs per game? Can men hit over the fence? What bats are legal?

Pick your answers, write them down, enforce them. This template covers slow-pitch softball, which is 95% of adult leagues.

Customize anything in [brackets] for your league.

Game format

  • Seven innings, or [60-minute time limit], whichever comes first
  • No new inning starts after [50 minutes]
  • Game is official after [5 complete innings] or [45 minutes] due to weather/time
  • Extra innings: International tiebreaker (runner on second to start each extra inning)

Time-limit games are standard in adult rec softball. Hard seven-inning games take too long and throw off multi-game nights.

Roster rules

  • Minimum roster size: [10 players]
  • Maximum roster size: [18 players]
  • Roster lock date: [end of week 4 of season]
  • Minimum games played to be playoff eligible: [50% of regular season games]

Coed requirements

  • Minimum women on the field: [4 of 10 positions]
  • Batting order must alternate genders as much as possible (no more than 2 men in a row unless necessary)
  • Walking a man with a woman behind him: [the woman may take 1st base automatically, man goes to 2nd] or [the woman must bat]
  • [Men's home runs over the fence count as singles] if running a balanced coed format

Coed rules prevent male-dominated play and keep the game balanced. Enforce them or your coed league becomes a men's league.

Substitutes and pickups

  • Each team may use up to [2 emergency subs] per game
  • Subs must not be rostered on another team in the same league/division
  • Subs cannot pitch for their sub team if they're the primary pitcher on another team
  • No subs allowed during playoffs

Standings and tiebreakers

Win-loss record is primary. When tied:

  1. Head-to-head record
  2. Run differential (capped at +/- [10] per game — softball has blowouts)
  3. Runs scored
  4. Runs allowed
  5. Coin flip

Playoffs

  • Top [6] of [8] teams make playoffs
  • Seeds [1 and 2] get byes
  • Single elimination bracket
  • Championship on the final week of the season

Playoff extra innings: international tiebreaker (runner on second to start each extra inning). No time limits in playoffs.

Code of conduct

  • Fighting. Immediate ejection and [1-game suspension]. Second offense is a season suspension.
  • Arguing calls. Ejection from the game. Repeated ejections [= 1-game suspension].
  • Throwing equipment. Ejection and [1-game suspension]. Includes bat throws and helmet throws.
  • Profanity. Warning, then ejection for continued use directed at officials or players.
  • Alcohol. [No alcohol in the dugout or on the field]. Post-game drinks fine.

Softball-specific rules

Pitching

  • Slow-pitch: pitcher must deliver with an underhand motion and an arc of [6-12 feet]
  • Illegal pitches result in a [ball] added to the count
  • Pitchers must maintain contact with the rubber at release

Batting

  • 3 strikes, 4 balls — standard counts
  • Foul on a [two-strike count] is an out (foul-out rule to speed games up) or [not enforced]
  • Bunting: [not allowed in slow-pitch] — results in batter out
  • Chopping: [not allowed] — batter out

Bat regulations

  • Bats must be [USSSA stamped] or [ASA/USA certified], as specified by the league
  • No banned or illegal bats — enforcement via visual check before each game
  • Illegal bat used in a game: batter out, player ejected, [automatic 1-game suspension]

Bat enforcement is serious business. Certified-only bat policies eliminate the ongoing "is that bat too hot?" debates.

Home runs

  • Home run limit: [3-5 per team per game over the fence]
  • Home runs beyond the limit are [outs] or [one-up rule — team must match the other team's home run count]
  • Inside-the-park home runs do not count against the limit

Running

  • Courtesy runners allowed for [players 40+ or upon mutual agreement]
  • One courtesy runner per team per inning
  • Sliding: standard, no malicious slides into fielders
  • Halfway commit rule: [runners may be called back if they haven't passed halfway] or [enforced base-to-base]

Defense

  • 10 players on the field in slow-pitch
  • Extra outfielder position optional (short fielder)
  • No infield fly rule in some rec leagues; enforced in others

Mercy rule

  • [15 or more runs after 3 innings]: game ends
  • [10 or more runs after 5 innings]: game ends

Equipment requirements

  • Matching team colors or provided jerseys
  • Helmets with face masks [required] or [optional for adults]
  • No metal cleats [allowed] or [permitted only in higher divisions]
  • Bats must be league-approved
  • Catcher's gear not required in slow-pitch

Weather policy

  • Lightning within [6 miles] = suspend play, wait 30 minutes after last strike
  • Heavy rain: commissioner or umpire may call game — official after [5 innings]
  • Field conditions: umpire's call on playability
  • Rainout makeups scheduled within [2 weeks]

Dispute resolution

Umpire calls are final. Rule interpretation disputes can be submitted to the commissioner within 24 hours. Commissioner has final authority on rule interpretations.

Forfeits

  • A team that fails to field [8 players by 10 minutes after start time] forfeits
  • Forfeit counts as a [7-0 loss] in standings
  • [Two forfeits = ineligible for playoffs]

Rosterlytic tracks forfeits, coed minimums, courtesy runner counts, and home run limits. All within the standings.

Pitch counts and time limits

  • No pitch count limits in slow-pitch
  • Game time limit: [60 minutes] as above
  • Umpires handle pace-of-play warnings

Amendments

These rules may be amended between seasons. Mid-season changes require written notification to all captains.

Using this template

Copy into your league document. Customize bracketed values to match your league's bat rules, home run limits, and coed requirements. Share with captains before game one.

Good softball leagues enforce rules consistently. Great softball leagues make the rules available to anyone who asks.
