Why kickball needs a written rulebook

Everyone thinks they know the rules of kickball from elementary school. But adult kickball has grown into its own sport with specific rules that don't match playground memories — strike zones, pitch requirements, beaning rules, coed minimums, walking policies.

Write the rules down, share them before game one, and you'll avoid 80% of the mid-game confusion that plagues new adult kickball leagues.

This template is based on common WAKA (World Adult Kickball Association) rules with typical adult rec modifications. Customize anything in [brackets].

Game format

  • [Four or five innings], or [50-minute time limit], whichever comes first
  • No new inning starts after [40 minutes]
  • Game is official after [3 complete innings] or [30 minutes] due to weather
  • Extra innings: international tiebreaker (runner on second to start)

Roster rules

  • Minimum roster size: [12 players]
  • Maximum roster size: [20 players]
  • Roster lock date: [end of week 2 of season] — kickball seasons are short
  • Minimum games played to be playoff eligible: [50% of regular season games]

Coed requirements

  • Minimum women on the field: [4 of 10-11 positions]
  • Kicking order must alternate as much as possible: [no more than 2 men in a row]
  • Walking a man with a woman behind him: [man automatically advances to 2nd] to prevent intentional walks
  • All rostered players present at the game must kick, even if not on the field

Coed rules matter more in kickball than in most sports because the game is already easy enough that male-dominated strategies would wreck it.

Substitutes and pickups

  • Each team may use up to [2 emergency subs] per game
  • Subs cannot be rostered on another team in the same league
  • Subs kick at the bottom of the lineup
  • No subs during playoffs

Standings and tiebreakers

Win-loss record is primary. Tiebreakers:

  1. Head-to-head record
  2. Run differential (capped at +/- [7] per game)
  3. Runs scored
  4. Coin flip

Playoffs

Options for kickball playoffs:

Option 1: Single elimination bracket

  • Top [4] or [6] teams make playoffs
  • Seeds 1-2 bye if top 6
  • Championship on final week

Option 2: Tournament day

  • Top [8] teams compete on a single Saturday
  • Bracket play throughout the day
  • Champion crowned that day with post-tournament party

Tournament day is the classic kickball finale and worth considering if you have field access.

Code of conduct

  • Fighting. Immediate ejection and [season suspension]. Kickball leagues don't need physical altercations.
  • Arguing with refs. Ejection after [one warning]. Captains are responsible for their team's conduct.
  • Profanity directed at opponents or officials. Warning, then ejection.
  • Alcohol. [Allowed on sidelines] or [Not allowed during games depending on venue]. Follow local regulations.

Kickball is a social league. The code of conduct reflects that — no fighting, no nastiness, keep it fun.

Kickball-specific rules

Pitching

  • Pitcher must [roll the ball on the ground] with continuous contact between ball and ground
  • No bouncing pitches — results in a ball
  • Strike zone: [one ball-width wide of the plate, no higher than knee height]
  • Pitcher must pitch from [the pitching strip, 4 feet in front of home plate] or [home plate]
  • 3 strikes, 4 balls

Kicking

  • Kick must be from [home plate area, behind the kicking line]
  • Foul ball: same rules as baseball — out if caught, foul if landed in foul territory
  • Bunts: [not allowed] in most adult leagues — results in out

Running

  • 60-foot basepaths standard
  • Force outs, tag outs, standard baseball rules
  • [Halfway commit rule] — once past halfway, runner must continue to the next base
  • Leadoffs and stealing: [not allowed]
  • Sliding: [allowed] but cleats-up or malicious slides result in ejection

Beaning (the key rule)

  • A fielder may throw the ball at a runner to tag them out
  • Ball must hit the runner [below the shoulders] — headshots are automatic safe plus [ejection for intentional]
  • Beaning off the base is out; on base is safe
  • Ball off any body part counts

This rule is the most unique to kickball. It's also the most injury-prone. Strict headshot enforcement protects players and keeps the game clean.

Fielding

  • [10 or 11 players on the field], standard positions
  • Catcher covers behind home plate
  • Pitcher must stay on the pitching strip until the ball is kicked
  • No fielder may interfere with a runner

Mercy rule

  • [10 or more runs after 3 innings]: game ends
  • [15 or more runs at any point after 2 innings]: game ends

Equipment requirements

  • Matching team colors or pinnies
  • Rubber-soled shoes — no metal cleats
  • Standard kickball (provided by the league)
  • No gloves in the field (it's kickball, not softball)

Weather policy

  • Lightning: suspend play immediately, wait 30 minutes after last strike
  • Heavy rain: ref or commissioner calls game — official after [3 innings]
  • Extreme heat: hydration breaks, shorter innings
  • Makeup dates within [1 week] if weather-canceled

Drinking policy

Kickball is the most drinking-friendly adult rec sport, but rules vary by venue:

  • [Alcohol permitted on sidelines] if venue allows
  • [Alcohol not permitted on field] during play — safety issue
  • Public parks usually prohibit alcohol — verify with local regs
  • No visibly intoxicated players on the field

Know your venue's rules and communicate them to players. Getting shut down by cops in week 3 is a bad look.

Dispute resolution

Ref calls are final. Rule disputes can be submitted to the commissioner within 24 hours. The commissioner has final authority on interpretations.

Forfeits

  • A team that fails to field [8 players, 3 women, by 10 minutes after start time] forfeits
  • Forfeit counts as a [7-0 loss] in standings
  • [Two forfeits = ineligible for playoffs]

Rosterlytic tracks forfeits, coed minimums, and playoff eligibility automatically. Commissioners don't have to manually enforce anything.

Amendments

These rules may be amended between seasons. Mid-season changes require notifying all captains before enforcement.

Using this template

Copy into your league document. Customize bracketed values. Share with captains before the first game. Print a copy for the first week's fields — new leagues always have rule questions in week one.

Kickball is supposed to be fun. Clear rules are what keeps it fun for everyone, not just the loudest team.
