Adult Beer League Hockey Rules
A customizable rulebook template for adult beer league hockey — game format, rosters, standings, playoffs, code of conduct, and safety-first modifications.
Why hockey needs a written rulebook more than any other sport
Hockey is fast, physical, and emotional. Without clear rules written down, a disputed hit or a missed offside call becomes a shouting match at center ice. Twenty minutes later the game is over and nobody remembers what happened except that it was ruined.
Every beer league needs a one-page document that covers what you can and can't do. Players should be able to read it in five minutes and know exactly what your league tolerates.
This template covers the essentials. Customize anything in [brackets] for your league.
Game format
- Three periods, [17 minutes each]
- Running clock through the game
- Stop time only [in the last 2 minutes of the third period] if the score is within [2 goals]
- Five-minute [running clock] overtime, followed by [3-round shootout] if tied
- No TV timeouts (obviously)
Running time is standard for beer league hockey. Stop time games take too long and rinks charge by the minute.
Roster rules
- Minimum roster size: [12 skaters + 1 goalie]
- Maximum roster size: [16 skaters + 1 goalie]
- Roster lock date: [end of week 3 of session]
- Minimum games played to be playoff eligible: [50% of session games]
Substitutes and pickups
- Each team may use up to [2 emergency subs] per game
- Subs cannot be rostered on another team at the same level or higher
- Subs must wear a visible jersey different from the team's regular jersey (or at least matching colors)
- Goalies are their own category — goalie subs allowed under league-approved goalie pool
- No subs allowed during playoffs
Standings and tiebreakers
Points system:
- Win: 2 points
- Overtime or shootout loss: 1 point
- Regulation loss: 0 points
When teams are tied in points:
- Head-to-head record
- Regulation wins
- Goal differential (capped at +/- [5] per game)
- Goals scored
- Coin flip
Playoffs
- Top [4] of [6] teams make playoffs
- Seed [1] plays seed [4], seed [2] plays seed [3]
- Single elimination bracket
- Championship on the final week of the session
- Playoff overtime: [5-minute 4-on-4 period], then [shootout if still tied]
Code of conduct
Hockey has more code of conduct enforcement than any other beer league sport. Write it, enforce it, don't compromise.
- Fighting. Automatic [1-game suspension, minimum]. Second fight [= season suspension]. Third [= removed from league]. Fighting includes dropping the gloves, throwing punches, or instigating a physical altercation.
- Checking. [No checking]. This is the biggest rule change from pro hockey and the one you'll enforce every week. Shoulder-to-shoulder contact is allowed while battling for the puck. Deliberate checks result in a [2-minute minor penalty, or a 5-minute major for dangerous checks].
- Slashing. [2-minute minor]. Major slash to hands/face [= 5-minute major + game misconduct].
- Cross-checking. [2-minute minor]. Cross-check to head/back [= 5-minute major + game misconduct].
- Boarding. Immediate [5-minute major + game misconduct].
- Charging. [2-minute minor] for contact after a clear running start.
- Referee abuse. [10-minute misconduct, or game misconduct for severe abuse]. Escalates to league discipline for repeat offenders.
Hockey-specific rules
- Icing. Enforced in all even-strength situations. [Hybrid icing — icing is called when the defending team gets to the faceoff circle first] or [touch icing — must be touched by a defending player].
- Offsides. Enforced. Delayed offside allowed (offsides player must clear the zone before play resumes).
- Slap shots. [Allowed] or [Banned in lower divisions for safety].
- High sticking. Above [the shoulder level] is high sticking. Penalty if contact with a player; washed-out goal if the puck hits a high stick in the offensive zone.
- Goalie interference. Goalie in the crease is protected. Contact results in [a penalty + washed-out goal].
- Delay of game. Puck shot over the glass from the defensive zone [= 2-minute minor].
Equipment requirements
- Helmet with full cage or half-shield required
- Shoulder pads, elbow pads, shin guards, gloves, hockey pants mandatory
- Neck guards [required] or [recommended]
- Mouthguards [recommended]
- Goalie full equipment: mask with cage, chest protector, pads, blocker, glove, leg pads
- Skates must be properly sharpened — refs can disallow dull skates for safety
Players who show up without proper equipment cannot play. No exceptions.
Goalie-specific rules
- Goalies are roster-locked like skaters
- Goalie pool subs allowed when a team's regular goalie is unavailable
- Goalies cannot be substituted mid-game except for injury
- Goalie interference: forward in the crease before the puck = washed-out goal
Alcohol policy
- [No alcohol in the rink, locker room, or bench area during games]
- Post-game drinks at the rink bar are fine
- Players showing up visibly intoxicated cannot play (liability issue)
The league bar is the core social venue in beer league hockey. Support it, but keep drinking out of game time.
Dispute resolution
Calls on the ice are final during the game. Rule disputes can be submitted in writing to the commissioner within 24 hours. The commissioner rules on interpretation; call disputes are not reversible.
Mercy rule
- When a team leads by [7 or more goals], no further goals count in stats (game continues for playing time)
- If a team leads by [10 or more goals in the third period], the game ends
Forfeits
- A team that fails to field [5 skaters + a goalie by 10 minutes after start time] forfeits
- Forfeit counts as a [3-0 loss] in standings
- [Two forfeits = ineligible for playoffs]
- Forfeit fees: team that forfeits pays their share of ice + ref costs, no refund
Rosterlytic tracks forfeits, goalie rotation, and suspension status automatically. Commissioners set the policies once, the system enforces them.
Weather and rink policies
If the rink loses power, floods, or is otherwise unavailable:
- Games are rescheduled within [2 weeks]
- Commissioner decides between makeup dates or using a backup rink
- No refunds for canceled games — session fees cover the full contract
Amendments
These rules may be amended by the commissioner between sessions. Mid-session amendments are rare and require major cause.
Using this template
Copy these rules into your league document. Customize the bracketed values. Share with every captain before session start. Have captains confirm they've read them.
Beer league hockey works because everyone shows up expecting the same thing. A written rulebook makes that possible.
