Adult Basketball Rec Rules
A customizable rulebook template for adult basketball leagues — game format, rosters, standings, playoffs, code of conduct, and common modifications.
Why a written rulebook matters
Every basketball league eventually hits a situation where two players disagree on a rule. A technical foul shoots free throws or just possession? Can you dunk on a breakaway? What counts as a backcourt violation in 3-on-3?
Having a written rulebook ends those arguments in seconds. Point to the rule, enforce it, move on. No written rules means every disagreement is a debate, and debates lose games.
This template covers the essentials. Customize anything in [brackets] to match your league's specifics.
Game format
- Game length: [two 20-minute halves with running clock] or [four 10-minute quarters]
- Clock stops in the last [1-2 minutes] of the final period on dead balls
- Halftime: [5 minutes]
- Timeouts: [2 per half, 1 full + 1 20-second]
- Shot clock: [none for rec] or [24 seconds if available]
- Overtime: [3-minute periods, sudden-death after first OT]
Running clock is standard for rec basketball because stop-clock games run too long. Save stop time for the end of close games.
Roster rules
- Minimum roster size: [8 players]
- Maximum roster size: [12 players]
- Roster lock date: [end of week 3 of regular season]
- Minimum games played to be playoff eligible: [50% of regular season games]
Substitutes and pickups
- Each team may use up to [2] emergency subs per game
- Subs cannot be rostered on another team in the same league
- Subs count toward the playoff eligibility of a team, not an individual
- No subs allowed during playoffs
Standings and tiebreakers
Standings are determined by regular season record. When teams are tied:
- Head-to-head record (if applicable)
- Point differential (capped at +/- [15] per game)
- Points scored
- Points allowed
- Coin flip
The point differential cap prevents one blowout from dominating tiebreakers. Without it, teams that ran up the score in week 2 get the benefit in week 10.
Playoffs
- Top [6] of [8] teams make playoffs
- Seeds [1 and 2] receive a bye in the first round
- Single elimination bracket
- Reseed after each round so the top remaining seed plays the lowest remaining seed
- Championship game on [the final week of the season]
Playoff overtime: [3-minute periods, multiple OTs until winner]. No games end in a tie in playoffs.
Code of conduct
This is the section that prevents most league drama. Write it, enforce it, refer to it.
- Fighting. Any physical altercation (pushing, shoving, punching) results in immediate ejection and [automatic one-game suspension]. Second offense is a season suspension. No appeals.
- Technical fouls. [Two technicals in one game = ejection]. Accumulation: [4 technicals across the season = 1 game suspension].
- Referee abuse. Verbal abuse of officials results in a technical foul and, if severe, an ejection.
- Trash talk. Allowed in good humor. Not allowed when it crosses into personal attacks, slurs, or threats.
- Alcohol. [No alcohol on the court or bench]. Post-game is fine.
Basketball-specific rules
- Fouls. Standard FIBA/NBA rules apply. [5 fouls = foul out] or [6 fouls for higher-level leagues].
- Free throws. [Bonus free throws on 7+ team fouls per half] or [Possession-based, no bonus].
- Dunking. [Allowed] or [No dunking on breakaways for liability reasons].
- 3-point line. [Standard NBA line] or [International line if the gym has both].
- Jump ball. [Possession arrow] or [Live jump ball].
- Shot clock violations. [Not enforced in most rec] or [Enforced with a 30-second shot clock].
- Backcourt violation. 10 seconds to cross half court with the ball.
- 3-second violation. Enforced in the paint.
Men's, women's, and coed modifications
Coed leagues often modify:
- Women's baskets [count for an extra point] or [no modifier]
- Minimum women on the court [2 at all times] or [rotation-based]
- Contact is reduced in coed leagues
Women's leagues typically follow the same rules as men's with reduced contact expectations.
Mercy rule
- If a team leads by [20 or more points in the second half], the clock runs continuously
- If a team leads by [30 or more points at any time], the game ends
Mercy rules prevent blowouts from dragging on and reduce injury risk in one-sided games.
Dispute resolution
Any disputed call during a game is ruled by the referee on the spot. Their ruling is final for that game. Rule disputes (not call disputes) can be escalated to the commissioner after the game via written submission.
The commissioner has final authority on rule interpretations and disciplinary actions.
Uniforms
- All players must wear matching team colors or provided jerseys
- No two players on the same team may share a number (for stat tracking)
- Jewelry [should be removed or covered] before games
- Proper basketball shoes required (no black soles that leave marks on the court)
Equipment
- League provides [game balls and scoreboards]
- Teams responsible for [practice balls, their own water, training supplies]
- Injured player protocols: any head injury = sit out rest of game; serious injury = call for medical attention
Weather and facility policies
For outdoor courts (if applicable):
- Games cancel for rain or lightning
- Rescheduled by [commissioner decision within 48 hours]
For indoor:
- Games proceed unless facility is closed
- If gym becomes unavailable, [commissioner reschedules within 2 weeks]
Forfeits
- A team that fails to field [5 players within 10 minutes of game time] forfeits
- Forfeit counts as a [20-0 loss] in standings
- [Two forfeits = ineligible for playoffs]
- No refunds for forfeited games
Rosterlytic tracks forfeits automatically and applies them to standings. Commissioners set the forfeit threshold once, and the system enforces it.
Amendments
These rules may be amended by the commissioner at any time. Major changes will be communicated to all captains and take effect the following week.
Using this template
Copy these rules into your league document. Customize the bracketed values to match your league. Share with every captain before the season starts. Require captains to acknowledge receipt.
The strongest rulebooks are the ones players have read. If captains don't know the rules, the refs and commissioner end up writing them on the fly every week.
Paste these rules into your league — Rosterlytic handles the rest.
