Lineup Management for Rec Leagues: Build Your Best Roster
Rosterlytic's lineup system adapts to your sport, giving you visual field diagrams, drag-and-drop ordering, and even chemistry-based suggestions. Here's how to get the most out of it.
Creating a lineup
Captains can set up lineups for any game:
- Open a game from the Games screen
- Go to the Lineup tab
- Tap Edit Lineup
From here, you'll see a sport-specific view with open position slots. Tap a slot to assign a player, or tap a player from the available list to place them.
Sport-specific views
Rosterlytic displays lineups differently based on your sport:
Hockey
- Line tabs — Switch between 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th lines
- Forward positions — LW (Left Wing), C (Center), RW (Right Wing)
- Defense positions — LD (Left Defense), RD (Right Defense)
- Goalie — Separate goalie slot
- Lines feed directly into the chemistry system (more on that below)
Basketball
- Court diagram — 5 starting positions (PG, SG, SF, PF, C)
- Assign players to their primary position on the court
Soccer
- Field diagram — Position slots arranged in your formation
- Assign players to positions across the field
Volleyball
- Position slots — Setter (S), Outside Hitter (OH), Middle Blocker (MB), Right Side (RS), Libero (L), Defensive Specialist (DS)
- Assign players by rotation position
Flag Football
- Offense-focused — QB, WR, RB, C
- In rec flag football everyone plays both sides, so Rosterlytic focuses on offensive assignments
Softball / Kickball
- Fielding positions — Standard diamond positions (P, C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, LF, CF, RF)
- Batting order — Separate drag-and-drop list for your batting lineup (see below)
Batting order
For softball and kickball, the batting order is managed separately from field positions:
- In the lineup editor, switch to the Batting Order tab
- You'll see all assigned players in a list
- Drag and drop players to reorder them
- The order is saved automatically
This lets you set your defensive alignment and batting order independently.
Your batting order also feeds directly into the Line Chemistry system. For softball and kickball, consecutive batters in the order are treated as batting pairs for synergy calculations. So if your 3rd and 4th hitters consistently produce runs together, that shows up as a high-chemistry batting pair. Keep this in mind when arranging your order — the data can reveal which back-to-back hitters create the most damage.
Lineup suggestions
Rosterlytic can suggest optimal lineups based on player data:
- In the lineup editor, tap the Suggestions button (lightbulb icon)
- The algorithm considers:
- Player availability — Who has RSVP'd yes for the game
- Synergy scores — How well players perform together (based on historical data)
- Position fit — Where each player performs best
- Review the suggestion and tap Apply to use it, or dismiss and adjust manually
Locking positions
If you already know where certain players should go:
- Assign them to their positions first
- Then tap Suggestions
- The algorithm will fill in the remaining slots around your locked choices
This is great when you have a core group that always plays together but need help filling out the rest.
Line Chemistry
Rosterlytic tracks how well players perform together in position-based combinations across all 9 sports. This feeds into both lineup suggestions and player profiles.
Chemistry zones by sport
Each sport tracks combinations that make sense for that game:
- Hockey — Forward lines (LW/C/RW) and defensive pairs (LD/RD)
- Basketball — Backcourt pairs (PG/SG) and frontcourt trios (SF/PF/C)
- Soccer — Back line, midfield, and attack combinations
- Volleyball — Setter-hitter combinations
- Flag Football — QB-receiver connections
- Softball — Battery combos (pitcher-catcher) and batting pairs
- Kickball — Batting pair synergy
How chemistry is calculated
Every time you enter stats for a game that has a saved lineup, Rosterlytic records which players were in the same position zone and how they performed together. Over time, this builds a chemistry profile.
The synergy score is based on core performance metrics including performance differential, combined stats, and win rate — weighted appropriately for each sport.
Star ratings
Synergy scores translate to a 1-5 star rating:
- 75+ = 5 stars
- 60-74 = 4 stars
- 45-59 = 3 stars
- 30-44 = 2 stars
- Below 30 = 1 star
Confidence levels
Chemistry data also shows a confidence indicator (Low, Medium, High) based on how many games the combination has played together. A 5-star rating based on 2 games is less reliable than a 4-star based on 15 games.
Where to see chemistry
- Player Profile > Chemistry tab — See which teammates a specific player has the best chemistry with
- Lineup Editor — Synergy indicators appear when assigning players to positions
- Team Stats > Chemistry tab — View top combinations across the season by zone
Applying lineups to a season
If you run the same lineup most weeks, you don't have to set it up for every game:
- Create your lineup for one game
- Tap the Apply to Season option
- The lineup will be copied to all future games in that season
You can still adjust individual games afterward without affecting the others.
Tips
- Set lineups before game day — Players can see the lineup in advance and know where they're playing
- Use suggestions as a starting point — The algorithm is smart, but you know your team best
- Track chemistry over time — The more games you log with lineups, the better the synergy data gets. For a deeper dive into how synergy scores work, read our Line Chemistry explainer
- Don't forget the batting order — For softball/kickball, field positions and batting order are separate, so make sure both are set
